Day 5-The Badlands

We have been so blessed with great weather this whole trip, until today. It was a drizzly day with 4 exhausted kids. The plan was to go hiking in the Badlands today. It cleared up so we decided to venture out. We saw some awesome views on our way to the hiking trails that we were planning to hike.

As we got out of the car to begin our hike, it started drizzling around us, so we quickly finished the short hiking trail we were on. Joey was freezing cold and needed to wear my sweeter.

We then went to the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. The older kids were very into this. Unfortunately we couldn’t go to the Delta 01 or Delta 09, because they were appointment only sites. Delta 09 is a missile silo and Delta 01 is a launch control facility.

Minuteman Missiles, at its peak during the Cold War, peaked into the 1000’s of missiles. Today it’s less than half that. It’s still pretty sobering to think that there are hundreds of nuclear missiles ready to fly at a minute’s notice.

After that stop we went back to hotel to get all packed up for our long drive home. We had such a fun day, despite the rain. The kids were mesmerized by all the different layers of rocks you can see. It is a true masterpiece that God has created. This trip has made me even more excited about getting some land and building on it. We are now more excited then ever to start our next step.

Once the sale of our house in North Carolina is finalized, we are going to start talking to some builders to evaluate the cost of building a stick built, prefab, or going with metal housing. They all have their pros and cons. Once we know which route we are going with, and have our old house sold, we will be looking for our little piece of heaven on Earth.
